The images I’m marveling at offer candid glimpses of San Diego gay bar culture from different epochs in modern gay history. A third snapshot: a festive lineup of Halloween-costumed contestants-a drag version of Tippi Hedren (a stuffed crow entangled in her stylish platinum updo), a garish clown, and a butch female cowboy-all vying for prizes awarded long ago in an unidentified San Diego gay bar.
#DENVER GAY BAR HISTORY FULL#
Another photo presents a dance floor crowd, beaming faces glistening under a sheen of sweat, big 1980s hair and lip gloss in full effect on the women (and on some men, too). There’s a shirtless, mustachioed blond on roller skates in front of a 1965 red Plymouth Barracuda the position of the Giant Dipper roller coaster and street signage in the background establishes the photo was taken in the vicinity of the Apartment, a women’s gay bar that opened in Mission Beach in 1974. I’m alone, but surrounded by faces smiling to me across the decades. I’m hunched over a smoky glass table covered with a treasure trove of photographs, shivering from the chilly air conditioning as much as from the excitement of discovering photographic gold nuggets. God, I want some cider.7:45 p.m., Lambda Archives, June 17, 2017 That's also how I learned about Snakebites. The single best thing you can do is find a group you like to go out with, regardless of how you know each other.

Katie Mullens is a bit uppity for my taste, but nice enough. The Irish Rover is one of my favorites, and Katie Mullens has had my business a time or two. That said, I've never felt uncomfortable in any bar in Denver, straight or gay. You can't ever get away from idiocy completely.

That isn't to say there aren't still idiots. There are a lot of gay spaces and gay friendliness in Denver on the whole. You can always spot a huge line outside of the Good Times next to Charlie's as soon as the bar closes. Either way, I really liked the bartenders when I went there last.Įither way, finish your night with another greasy burger. Dunno what the crowd is, but I think it might be lesbian. I haven't been there since it changed over, but I like the space itself and the last few times I've driven by, the patio has been packed. If they don't have pitcher specials, they always run the personal pitcher special.Ī few blocks over, next to Romantix, is X Bar, which used to be Her Bar. Charlie's does also have personal pitchers for $3. It's always a good thing to see the country dancing - excellent show, there. If it is drag night, then you'll get a good show. If it's not drag night, then the club side will also be open, along with the country side. If it's not First Friday, you can generally find a good crowd at Charlie's. The drinks aren't always cheaper, but the crowd more than makes up for it. That means it's packed with lesbians of all sorts, but as with all other evenings, this just means that Tracks is bloody well PACKED. First Fridays at Tracks are the largest monthly women's party in Denver. Then head to Tracks if you want to dance. It's a good meat market type place to get your pre-gaming on for cheaper, or at least more reasonably. Starting early in the evening, begin your night at Hamburger Mary's. It can be a friendly bar, especially if you can relate to cowboys (and cowboy drag). The first gay bar I ever went to here, after moving from the midwest (and coming out) was Charlies. Obviously stay away from the Colorado Springs area- lots of unhappy everything-phobes there. The Highlands, Cap Hill, Congress Park, and surrounding areas are probably the gayest, but those are just off the top of my head. I'd say it's a good place to live, depending on location. The back patio is lovely.Īs for Denver's acceptance of teh gays. It's a bar you go to where you can talk to your friends (since there isn't loud music blaring) and relax (since there are comfy chairs in every room). It's essentially a piano bar right in an still-operating antique store, and it gives you the feeling that your at a house party of an eccentric millionaire. The Black Crown has only been open for a month or so, but it's not like any bar I've ever been to. Google for their web site- it's your basic 'gay bar', and can be quite cruisy, for better or worse.

The Wrangler is a neighborhood and self-proclaimed "bear bar", with a quite legendary beer bust held on Sundays. My husbear and I really only go to two bars: The Wrangler and the Black Crown.
